Scholar’s mate
Scholar’s mate is chess’s most famous trap: the queen and bishop team up against f7, the weakest point in Black’s camp. Beginners lose many games to it, and win just as many once they learn to see it coming.

How to deliver it
The queen is on h5 and the bishop on c4, both aiming at f7. Only the king defends the square, and one defender is not enough against two attackers. The queen takes on f7, protected by the bishop, and the king can neither capture nor flee. Checkmate in four moves.
How to defend
Facing an early queen aiming at f7, do not panic: cover the square calmly. Guard the e5 pawn first, for example with the knight to c6, then play g6 to chase the queen, and develop the knight to f6. Now the trap is defused, and the early queen is just a target.
