How to deliver it
Your own king on b6 is the key: it covers the escape squares around the black king. The queen sits wall to wall on b7, protected by your king, and the black king has nowhere to go. Checkmate.
How to defend
If you are on the losing side, there is one hope: stalemate. If you have no legal moves and are not in check, the game is a draw. So always look out for whether your opponent is careless and gives you stalemate instead of mate. It is the most common rescue in lost endgames.
